50 rupees first salary, 18 flop movies, then a dinner changed Shammi Kapoor’s luck

There are some actors in Bollywood who are still in the hearts of people due to their vivacity. Shammi Kapoor is one of them, who filled Indian cinema with enthusiasm with the echo of ‘Yahoo’. His dance, his style and his impeccableness were quite different from the rest of the actors of that era and that is why he was seen standing apart from the crowd.

Shammi Kapoor gained popularity with the film Tumsa Nahi, released in 1957, but very few people would know that the film was earlier in Dev Anand’s bag, but at that time Dev Anand refused to work with Budting actress Amita, and when director Nasir Hussain was looking for an alternative, Shammi Kapoor came in front of him. Although Nasir Hussain had no significant confidence in him at that time, but when the conversation took place on the dinner table one evening, everything changed, and this dinner came as a significant turn of career.

Shammi Kapoor’s early life

Shammi Kapoor was born on 21 October 1931 in Mumbai. His real name was Shamsher Raj Kapoor. Father Prithviraj Kapoor had already made a name in the world of theater and films, and brother Raj Kapoor was the emerging face of the industry at that time. Shammi Kapoor’s early studies were done in Kolkata, where Prithviraj Kapoor used to do theater. When the family returned to Mumbai, Shammi also joined the Earth Theater. It was from here that he started acting. Here he used to work as a junior artist and he used to get monthly salary only 50 rupees.

As a child, he learned classical music, but his interest was towards Western Music, which later saw a lot in his dancing style.

Film career

His film career started with ‘Jeevan Jyoti’ in 1953, but the failure of 18 consecutive films disappointed him. But then I came to ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha’ in 1957.

According to Journalist Rauf Ahmed, who wrote Shammi Kapoor’s biography ‘Shammi Kapoor: The Game Changer’, Dev Anand was first signed for this film, but he refused to work with Amita. Director Nasir Hussain did not want to take Shammi Kapoor in the lead role. But Shammi took him to dinner, and the conversation there changed the director’s thinking.

The film became, released, and Shammi Kapoor’s fate overturned.

Shammi Kapoor’s stardom in Era

Shammi Kapoor’s stardom reached heights with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ of 1959 and then 1961’s ‘Junglee’. The song ‘Yahoo’ from the movie ‘Junglee’! Even today is the most memorable song of Indian cinema, and ‘Yahoo’ people speak with passion. After this, films like ‘Professor’ (1962), ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ (1964), ‘Animal’ (1965), ‘Third Manzil’ (1966), and ‘Brahmachari’ (1968) made Shammi Kapoor the stylish and energetic hero of the 60s.

He received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his brilliant performance in ‘Brahmachari’ (1968). But as age increased, injuries and health problems slowed them. In the shooting of the film ‘Rajkumar’, an elephant collision broke the leg, due to which he had to rest for a long time.

In the 1970s, Shammi started playing supporting roles. His role in ‘Vidhata’ (1982) was highly appreciated and for this he received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

A glimpse of Shammi Kapoor’s personal life

Talking about personal life, in 1955, Shammi Kapoor married actress Geeta Bali in a very filmy style. According to Rauf Ahmed, there was a difference in the age of Shammi and Geeta Bali. Geeta was older than her, and she feared that parents would not agree to this marriage. So he enlisted the help of Johnny Walker. Please tell that Johnny himself married Nur Jahan secretly. Shammi was so excited to marry Geeta that he forgot to take vermilion in the temple in a hurry, so he had filled the demand for Geeta with lipstick.

Shammi Kapoor in her last days

Shammi Kapoor’s last film was ‘Rockstar’, which was released in 2011. Ranbir Kapoor was seen in it. In this film, he played the role of Ustad Jamil Khan. The film was released on 11 November, but three months earlier, Shammi Kapoor died after kidney failure on 14 August 2011.
