IIT-The body of a PhD student found hanging from the noose in Kharagpur, incidents have happened 6 times in campus so far
The body of a researcher was found hanging in the afternoon on Saturday (September 20, 2025) in IIT Kharagpur. The body of the researcher student was recovered from BR Ambedkar Hall at around 2 pm. This is the fifth incident of suspicious cases of suicide this year in this prestigious institution.
After receiving the information, the Kharagpur Town Police took the body of the student in its possession. The deceased researcher student has been identified as 27 -year -old Harsh Kumar Pandey, who was originally from the state of Jharkhand and was doing PhD in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. After recovering the body, the police started investigation in the case and the body has been sent for postmortem.
Father had contact with IIT security staff
The case was discovered when Harsh Kumar Pandey’s father Manoj Kumar Pandey could not contact his son on the phone. After this, he immediately informed the security staff of IIT Kharagpur. After receiving the information, when the security personnel went to find out about the student, they found that his room was closed from inside. After this, security personnel called the Hijli police and recovered the body of the student at around 2 pm and took BC Roy Hospital, IIT Kharagpur, where doctors declared Harsh Kumar Pandey dead.
IIT-Total cases of untimely death in Kharagpur increased to 6
With the confirmation of this incident, the total number of unnatural deaths in IIT Kharagpur has increased to six this year. Apart from this incident, the bodies of people were found hanging from the noose in five other cases. The last incident took place in July two months ago, when Chandradeep Pawar of Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh died due to suffocation. He was a second year student of electrical engineering.
Several steps taken to prevent suicide cases on campus
Suman Chakraborty, director of IIT Kharagpur, has taken several steps to prevent students’ suicides on the campus after taking over on June 23. For this, Setu App, Mother Campus and many other programs have been started, through which the mental health of the students can be promoted. Even on September 10, students of IIT Kharagpur took part in the torch procession on World Suicide Prevention Day.
