Question on women’s participation in judiciary, SCBA wrote a letter to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SBCA) expressed concern over the low proportion of women judges in the Supreme Court and the High Court across the country on Saturday (30 August 2025). The resolution passed by the SBCA said, “The Chief Justice of India and the collegium are requested to immediately consider the promotion of more women judges in the upcoming stages of judicial appointments in the Supreme Court and the High Court.”

The lawyers’ institution said that it is recorded in the record that many High Courts like Uttarakhand, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur currently have no female judges and there are about 1,100 sanctioned posts of judges in the High Court across the country, out of 670, men are working on only 670 and women are working on only 103, while the remaining are vacant.

No female judge from the bench is promoted

The proposal said, ‘SCBA expresses deep disappointment that no female judge was promoted in the recent appointments in the High Court, while no female judge has been appointed in the Supreme Court since 2021. Presently only one female judge is working in the bench of the Supreme Court.

It said that SCBA President Vikas Singh had written a letter to Chief Justice BR Gavai on May 24 and July 18, urging that the Supreme Court and the High Court should be filled with at least proportional representation on the posts in the High Court.

Necessary to ensure equal representation

The lawyers’ institution said, “SCBA firmly believes that more gender balance in the court bench is necessary not only to ensure fair and equal representation, but is also necessary to strengthen public confidence in the judiciary, enrich the judicial approach and reflect the diversity of our society in the highest institution of justice.”
