Justice Vikram Nath: ‘Dogs also bless me and …’, know why Vikram Nath, senior judge of Supreme Court, expressed gratitude to CJI

Justice Vikram Nath, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, famous for his light talk inside and outside the court, said on Saturday (August 30, 2025) that the case of stray dogs has made him famous worldwide.

A special bench of three judges headed by Justice Vikram Nath amended the 11 August order of the two -judge bench on August 22, in which stray dogs caught from the shelter sites in Delhi and surrounding areas were banned.

CJI BR Gawai expressed gratitude

Speaking at a regional conference on a human-wildlife conflict organized by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, he said that he is grateful to the Chief Justice of India BR Gawai for handing over the case.

Justice Nath, who is in the race to become the Chief Justice of India in 2027, said, “For a long time I have been known for my minor work in the legal fraternity, but I am also grateful to stray dogs who have given me recognition not only in this country, but also in the entire civil society of the world. I am also grateful to our Chief Judge.”

‘Dogs are also giving me blessings and best wishes’

He said, “I am also getting messages that apart from dog lovers, dogs are also giving me blessings and best wishes.” A bench headed by Justice Nath said that dogs could be sterilized, they can be vaccinated and can be released back to the area from where they were picked up.

However, a bench of Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria said that the order would not apply to dogs with rabies -infected or aggressive behavior. The bench revised the instructions of August 11 as very rigid.
