There is bad news for those fond of cold drinks, energy drinks, cigarettes and gutkha. The GST Council has imposed 40 percent tax on Sin Goods. Products that are harmful to health, but people still use them. The government has kept a separate tax slab for Sin Goods, which is the highest. If we talk about alcoholic beverages, then it is kept out of the purview of GST. These state governments impose tax according to their own.
Central Government has made pan masala, There was a 28 percent tax on harmful or luxury items like tobacco, sugar and expensive vehicles, they have now been put into a tax slab with 40 percent. Cigarettes, cigars, churutes, cigrilo, gutkha, chewing tobacco (eg Zarda), unmanned tobacco, bidi, aromatic tobacco and paan masala will be taxed at 40 percent.
Running luxury vehicles will be more expensive now
For petrol, 1200 cc will be applicable to luxury cars with engines with more than 1500 cc engine as well as a new tax slab of 40 percent on sweet, flavored and carbonated beverages.
GST removed from everyday goods
The central government has removed the tax from many everyday goods including milk, cheese, chhena, roti and paratha. All these will be outside the purview of GST. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Wednesday (September 3) that GST has also been removed from many medicines. The new GST will be implemented from 22 September.
Why GST was not imposed on alcohol
GST will not be implemented on liquor, the central government has completely handed it over to the state government. State governments will impose tax on this according to their own.
