Before meeting Putin with Putin, PM Modi spoke to Jailonski, said ‘India will complete the support’

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Saturday (August 30, 2025) spoke to Ukrainian President Volodimir Jailonsky. He made India aware of India’s commitment to give all possible support to the peaceful solution of Ukraine struggle.

Posting on social media ‘X’, PM Modi said, ‘Thank you to President Jailonsky for his phone call today. We exchanged ideas on the ongoing struggle, its human aspect, peace and efforts to restore stability. India gives full support to all efforts in this direction.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Jailonsky tweeted, ‘I informed PM Modi about the participation of European leaders in Washington with President Trump. This was a useful and important interaction, in which a common approach was revealed among the partners on how to achieve real peace. Ukraine confirmed his readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia.

Nearly two weeks have passed and during this time, when Russia should have prepared diplomacy, Moscow has not given any positive indication, only carried out condemnable attacks on civilian bases and killed dozens of our people. I thank the Prime Minister for their condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

PM Modi at Shanghai Cooperation Organization Conference

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said that leaders of India and Ukraine reviewed the progress of partnership between the two countries and discussed ways to increase cooperation in all areas with each other’s interests. This conversation took place when Prime Minister Modi is going to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Conference in Tianjin, China and he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

American tariff criticism from India

All this is happening at a time when America has imposed a 50% tariff (fee) on many Indian goods, expressing displeasure over buying oil from Russia on behalf of India. The US government alleges that India is providing financial assistance to the Ukraine war by trade with Russia. India has strongly criticized this action of America and described these tariffs as ‘unfair and wrong’.
