Dam on Brahmaputra, peace on the border and PM Modi’s visit to China … What happened in a meeting between Ajit Doval and Wang Yi?

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) that India-China relations have improved in the last nine months, as there has been peace on the border. He interacted with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the tension on the border and related issues.

Doval and Wang held a 24th round of talks under the framework of the Special Representative Tantra, a day earlier, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the Indian side strongly raised the issue of all kinds of terrorism including border terrorism and reminded that one of the original objectives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was to combat the evil of terrorism.

Transparency required in dam construction

There is less than a fortnight left at the annual SCO summit to be held in China. The statement said that Jaishankar also outlined India’s concerns regarding the construction of a huge dam being carried out by China at the bottom of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River), as it would have an impact on the lower coastal states.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that it said that the need for excessive transparency in this regard was strongly underlined. In the Special Representative (SR) talks, issues related to ‘reducing stress, delimitation and boundary matters’ were discussed. Wang arrived in Delhi on a two -day visit on Monday (August 18, 2025).

Peace and harmony on borders

He further said that his journey is being seen as part of the efforts being made by both neighbors to rectify his relationship again. After the fierce struggle in the Galwan Valley in 2020, there was a lot of tussle in relations between the two countries.

In his initial address on television, the National Security Advisor recalled his Beijing Yatra last December for the previous round of Special Representative Dialogue and said that since then there has been a ‘tendency of advancement in relations between the two sides’. He said, ‘The boundaries are calm, peace and harmony remains, our bilateral relations have become more solid.

PM Modi will visit China

Doval has also formally announced that PM Modi will visit China to attend the SCO summit to be held in Tianjin on 31 August and 01 September. He said that in view of this visit, the talks of special representatives have achieved great importance.

Doval also mentioned the talks between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a multilateral program in the Russian city of Kazan in October last year and said that both sides have benefited greatly since then. Doval said, “The new atmosphere that has created, has helped us to move forward in various fields that we were working on.”

It is necessary to increase mutual confidence through strategic communication

The meeting between Modi and Jinping took place between India and China two days after the agreement to retreat the remaining two confrontation points in East Ladakh from Depsang and Demchok. The two leaders have decided to recur many things, including talks between special representatives to normalize bilateral relations.

The Chinese Foreign Minister in his statement said that both sides should increase mutual confidence through strategic communication, expand shared interests through exchange and cooperation and properly resolve specific issues on boundaries.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China is of special importance

Wang said, ‘We are happy to see that now the stability on the boundaries has been restored. Now there is an important opportunity for improvement and development in bilateral relations. The Chinese side gives great importance to the Prime Minister’s visit to China to attend the SCO summit on our invitation. The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement that in the discussion between the two foreign ministers, bilateral, regional and international issues of shared interest were discussed.

He said that the Indian side strongly raised the issue of all kinds of terrorism including cross -border terrorism and reminded that one of the basic objectives of the SCO was to combat the evil of terrorism. Minister Wang has agreed that the top priority should be given to combat terrorism. In the Special Representative Dialogue, both sides discussed the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to maintain peace and harmony.
