‘Dangerous dogs will go to shelter home, return again after sterilization’, Andhra government’s big step
Damodar Naidu, director of the Animal Husbandry Department of Andhra Pradesh, has appealed to the public to cooperate on Friday (September 05, 2025) to control the population of stray dogs. He said that the Supreme Court of India has recently issued guidelines for the management and control of stray dogs, under which the local bodies, such as municipal administrations such as municipal administrations and major gram panchayats, animal birth control (ABC) program are paying special attention to the sterilization of stray dogs.
Talking to IANS, Damodar Naidu said, ‘It is the responsibility of both the government and the citizens to control the population of stray dogs. There is no objection to keeping stray dogs in specific areas from the point of view of compassion towards humanity and animals. However, animal lovers have been advised to give food to dogs only at the designated places while following the guidelines of the Supreme Court.
Dogs get food at certain time and place
He said that urban and rural bodies have been instructed to identify such places, so that dogs get food at certain times and places. This can prevent mutual fighting and attacks arising from it, which often pose a threat to passers -by.
He told that every dog protects its area. Therefore, the Supreme Court and the government have instructed local bodies to continue the sterilization program and leave the dogs back to their original field after treatment.
Dogs will be free after sterilization
Four agencies approved by the Indian Animal Welfare Board in Andhra Pradesh are currently running a sterilization campaign. These agencies have signed a memorandum with 34 municipal bodies and are actively doing sterilization work.
Appealing to the public, Naidu said, ‘Identify dogs requiring sterilization and inform the urban bodies. On receiving the information, these dogs will be caught and taken for sterilization in ABC theaters. After sterilization, dogs will be kept under surveillance for 5-6 days and when they are recovered, they will be left back to the same place.
Government will keep aggressive dogs in shelter site
He also said that cooperation of public, local communities and urban bodies is important in controlling the danger of stray dogs. Citizens are requested to immediately inform the environment department, urban bodies, local revenue and police departments of dogs, aggressive dogs, habitual dogs, attacking people, habitual people, or pursuing bike riders.
Naidu said that such dangerous dogs will be taken to shelter sites. The government and the concerned departments will strictly follow the guidelines of the Supreme Court. He appealed to the local residents for active cooperation in solving this problem, so that the population of stray dogs can be controlled and a safe and balanced environment can be created.
