Do crores of rupees come from America to increase voting in India’s elections? Foreign Ministry responded

The Ministry of External Affairs said in Parliament that the US Embassy has informed that the USAd/India neither funded, nor provided any work related to voting percentage in India for polling percentage in India from FY14 to 2024. The Ministry of External Affairs said this on Thursday (August 21, 2025) in a written reply to a CPI (M) Rajya Sabha member John Britas.

John Britas questioned the status of action taken by the government on the report claiming the use of funds from the United States International Development Agency (USAD) to increase the voting percentage in Indian elections.

Statistics released by American Embassy

In his written reply, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh said, ‘On February 28, the Ministry of External Affairs requested the US Embassy in New Delhi to present the expenditure incurred on the USAds’ assistance/funded by the USAd in the last ten years (except the projects being implemented under seven partnerships with the Government of India) immediately.’

He said, “The figures were shared by the US Embassy on July 2, which according to him, the implementation partners in the financing made by the USAd in India from 2014 to 2024 include details of the major achievements of the participants, objectives and each activity.”

Plan to close all works by USAd

According to Singh, the embassy mentioned that USAd/India did not provide or provide $ 2.1 crore for voting percentage in India from the financial year 2014 to 2024, nor has it done any work related to voting percentage in India.

He said that on July 29, the US embassy informed the Ministry of External Affairs that it was planning to close all the USAD works by 15 August 2025. On 11 August 2025, the US Embassy in New Delhi informed in a letter sent to the Economic Affairs Department that all the seven partnerships signed with the Government of India would end from 15 August 2025.
