Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is constantly alleging that under the pressure of BJP, the Election Commission is removing the names of opposition voters from the voter list on a large scale. He said that there have been disturbances in the voter list in many states. On this, on Friday (September 19, 2025), the Election Commission released his allegations as baseless and said that the process of removing or adding names in the voter list is completely lawful.
The Commission has made it clear that any common citizen can fill the online form-7 and apply to remove the name from the voter list, but the name cannot be deleted automatically. Under the rules, the concerned voter is issued a notice and the opportunity to hear is given and the name is allowed to be removed only after investigation.
Election Commission statement regarding Karnataka case
Citing the Aland case of Karnataka, the Commission said that in the year 2023, 6,018 applications were received there to remove the name. In the investigation, only 24 applications were found to be correct, while the remaining 5,994 applications were fake. In view of the seriousness of the case, an FIR was lodged at the Aland police station and investigation started. Similarly, 7,792 new voter applications were received in Rajura in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, out of which 6,861 were found to be invalid and dismissed.
The Commission said that these cases are being investigated by the police and the Election Commission is continuously providing necessary documents and information to the investigating agencies. The Commission says that its priority is to include every qualified citizen in the voter list and remove ineligible entries.
Disobedience on democratic institutions
The Election Commission also said that preparations for the voter list are a transparent process and by making baseless allegations about it, only the confusion among the voters and the disbelief on democratic institutions. The Commission has appealed to the political parties to make a statement responsibly and avoid factless allegations on the subject like voter list.
