Former Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has now become the newly elected Vice President of India. National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan won the election by securing 452 votes in the Vice Presidential election held on Tuesday (September 9, 2025). CP Radhakrishnan’s full name is Chandrapuram Ponusamy Radhakrishnan, who originally belongs to Tamil Nadu, the state at the southern end of India and who has a long political experience of more than five decades.
Born on 20 October 1957 in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, CP Radhakrishnan (CPR) was named by his mother after former President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. After the announcement of the son’s name for the post of Vice President, his mother said that my first son was named after Murugan and the second was named after Krishna. Then his father once jokingly said that he would be like Dr. Radhakrishnan.
CPR’s family has been active in politics for more than 25 years
CK Radhakrishnan’s uncle CK Kuppusamy was also elected MP for three terms from the Congress party. His family has been in active politics for more than 25 years. Talking about CP Radhakrishnan, he was elected as the State Executive Member of Jana Sangh in the year 1974. He then won the Lok Sabha election from Coimbatore in 1998 and became MP. One of the selected candidates who became BJP MP from Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan also held the post of President of Tamil Nadu state of BJP from 2003 to 2006.
RSS Had started politics from
CP Radhakrishnan joined active politics as a RSS volunteer in the 70s. After this, he was elected a member of the State Executive Committee in the Jana Sangh. Tamil Nadu was elected BJP secretary after working as a worker for a long time in 1994.
Subsequently, in the years 1998 and 1999, he was elected twice as an MP from Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu. As an MP in the Lok Sabha, he worked as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Textile.
CP Radhakrishnan was the Governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra
CP Radhakrishnan has also been the Governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra before being elected Vice President of India. On February 18, 2023, CP Radhakrishnan was appointed the Governor of Jharkhand on behalf of the central government. He took over as the Governor of Jharkhand for about one and a half years till July 30, 2024. After this he was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra. However, during this time he also took over the additional charge of the Governor of Telangana and Puducherry.
