Gateway of India in Mumbai does not stop making passenger JT, Supreme Court refuses to intervene in Bombay High Court order

Construction of new passenger jetty and terminal at Mumbai’s Gateway of India will continue. The Supreme Court has refused to interfere in the Bombay High Court’s decision on Monday (September 1, 2025). On July 15, the High Court rejected 3 petitions against the passenger jetty and terminal facility being made by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB).

A bench of Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai and Vinod Chandran of Justice said that this is a policy subject, which comes under the jurisdiction of the government. The Supreme Court had approached the Supreme Court against this project costing Rs 229 crore. Spread over 1.5 acres in the sea, this project is being built near the Radio Club in South Mumbai, about 280 meters from the Gateway of India.

Construction on poles in the sea, there will be inconvenience of local people from the project- stated in the petition
The petition stated that the project includes parking of 150 cars, VIP lounge, waiting area, ampithator, ticket counter and administrative sector as well as tennis racket-shaped forming a huge jetty. This construction is being done on poles in the sea. This project will inconvenience the local people as the issue of traffic congestion has not been considered.

Petition has filed for its convenience, Maharashtra government said
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Maharashtra government, said that some people have filed this petition for their convenience. Instead of these people, attention should be focused on the large population of Mumbai which will benefit from this project. Tushar Mehta said, ‘This jetty can be used to reach Navi Mumbai and Mandwa by sea. Traveling in this way will be a third less time. Also, there will be a decline in traffic and congestion.
