‘If a single name is removed from the voter list in Bengal …’, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s open challenge to the Election Commission
Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on Friday (August 08, 2025) that if a single name in West Bengal is wrongly removed from the final voter list, the party would surround the Election Commission with one lakh people of the state.
Talking to reporters at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport after returning from New Delhi, Diamond Harbor MP Banerjee said that the proposed special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists will not be allowed in Bengal.
Poor people will be taken away
Banerjee said, ‘My party’s stand is clear, the way the BJP wants to implement the SIR in Bengal, that is, wants to cover the process of one or two years in just one or two months, the result will be that the poor people will be out of the list first. 65 lakh names have been removed in Bihar.
He said, ‘There will be no special intensive revision in Bengal. If a single name is removed, we will surround the Election Commission with one lakh Bengalis. Earlier, Banerjee said that neither his party nor any constituent of ‘India’ alliance has any intention to disrupt the functioning in Parliament, but the SIR of the voter list should be discussed immediately.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi supported
He supported the allegations of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the voter list in an assembly constituency of Karnataka. Banerjee said that Rahul Gandhi’s claims should be investigated. Recently, Banerjee, who was appointed the leader of the Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha, said, “We want the House to go, but not without discussing SIR.”
He said, ‘Talking about discrepancies in the voter list, then how were the 2024 general elections held using old lists? Did the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and other cabinet minister win elections using a flawed mandate? ‘
How will the process of two years be completed in two months?
Banerjee questioned, ‘How can the process of two years be completed in two months?’ Banerjee has expressed concern that the SIR exercise can be used for the benefit of the BJP, especially in the constituencies where the difference of victory in the previous elections was very less.
He said, ‘In the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won in places like Balurghat and Bishnupur by very little margin. We will not allow SIR in Bengal. Banerjee also spoke on the allegations of the Trinamool Congress of harassment of Bangla -speaking migrants in BJP ruled states. He said, ‘Why should the poor citizens of West Bengal be harassed.’
Conspiracy to remove the names of real voters
The Trinamool Congress MP also accused the Election Commission (EC) of collusion with the BJP and said that a conspiracy was conspired to deliberately remove the names of real voters in West Bengal. Asked if there was any discussion on the name of a consensus candidate in the opposition ‘India’ alliance for the post of Vice President, he said, ‘There has been no such discussion yet. We will decide on this matter at the right time.
