The Odisha Education Department has suspended a teacher in a government upper primary school in Mayurbhanj district for giving physical punishment for physical punishment. Officials gave this information on Monday (15 September 2025).

Female teacher beat up for not touching his feet

The incident took place on Thursday (11 September 2025) in the Khandadeula Government Upper Primary School under the boundary of Bassinga Police Station. Officials claimed that the assistant teacher Sukranti Kar allegedly beat 31 students of class six, seven and eight with bamboo sticks if they did not touch their feet after morning prayer.

According to officials, students usually respect the teachers by touching the feet of the teachers, but on Thursday, the teachers arrived there after the end of the prayer session, so the students did not touch their legs. Angered by this, he allegedly beat up the students, causing bruises on the hands and back to many students.

A student’s hand broken

The school management committee said after investigation that a boy fractured his hand, while a girl fainted and had to take him to the hospital. After the incident, Principal Purnachandra Ojha, Block Education Officer (BEO) Biplab Kar, Package Resource Center Coordinator Debashish Sahu and members of the School Management Committee investigated the case and found the female teacher guilty.

Biplab Kar said, “The accused teacher was suspended on Saturday (13 September 2025).” He further said that action was taken taking the matter seriously. The Odisha government has banned physical punishment in all educational institutions since September 2004.
