It is the responsibility of the judiciary to have the courage to remind people to remind people: Supreme Court

Amid the uproar over the order on stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court has said that the only responsibility of the judiciary is to have the courage and power to remind people of the truths that they do not like to listen. A copy of the order of Monday (August 11, 2025) was made available on Wednesday (August 13, 2025).

In this, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan’s bench instructed the officials of Delhi-NCR to start removing stray dogs from all areas quickly and permanently transfer them to dog shelter sites.

This great responsibility of the judiciary

The order said, “The judiciary should not come under the influence of the popular emotions prevalent at that time, because its role is not to echo the immediate feelings, but to maintain the permanent principles of justice, conscience and equality.”

It said, “It is a great responsibility of the judiciary as a patron of the guards and rights of the living people to have courage and power to remind people of the truths that they do not like or do not want to listen.”

Urge to be part of the exercise

The bench expressed its awareness about ‘true love and care’ towards stray dogs and urged people to come forward and be a part of this exercise. The order said, ‘Given the concerns of the interventionors, we urge all of us to adopt dogs and give them shelter in our homes. However, we do not ignore the virtues of all those who have love and concern for animals.

The court underlined that an attempt is being made to create ‘virtual division’ among the ‘animal lovers’ and indifferent people towards animals. It said, ‘But due to all practical reasons, the basic issue of the problem is still unanswered.’
