Kerala Pam: What is the brain -eating amoeba, who took the lives of 19 people in Kerala, what did the Health Minister tell?

Primary amybic meningo encephalitis (PAM) infection in Kerala is spreading quite rapidly. So far this year, 69 cases have been reported, out of which 19 people have died. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that some cases have been reported in the state this year, but no group (cluster) has occurred.

The minister said that in the year 2025, 69 cases of this rare and deadly brain infection have been recorded so far. Talking to ANI, he said, ‘This year only a few cases have come up, no group has spread. A cluster was found in 2024, because people were using the same water source, but there is no such case in 2025.

This causes Pam infection

The Health Department of Kerala is cautious after the cases of primary amybic meningo ,cephilitis (PAM). Explain that Pam is a very rare and fatal amybic infection of the brain, which is caused by Negarria Foulry amoeba. It is called ‘brain-eating amoeba’.

According to the official report, Kerala has recorded several deaths due to the disease in August and September this year. Due to this, the Ministry of Health, along with the National Disease Control Center and Kerala Health Department, has increased the surveillance in the entire state. Officials said that this year there has not been a case of spreading the disease from the water source.

How does Pam infection spread?

Health Minister Veena George said that in the year 2023, health arrangements have been improved in Kerala after the fierce outbreak of Nipah viral. Physicians have been asked to examine every case of meningo -esophylitis for amoebic encephalitis and treat it immediately. According to the expert, Pam occurs when Negarria Foulri enters the body through the nose. This entry into the body is caused by swimming or bathing in contaminated fresh water, that is, it does not spread by drinking water.
