More than two lakh Indians left citizenship in 2024, central government gave information in Lok Sabha
The Central Government on Friday (August 8, 2025) told the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, that in the year 2024, more than two lakh Indian citizens renounced their citizenship. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh gave this information in the written reply to a question asked in the Lok Sabha. Congress MP K.K. C. Venugopal had asked the central government how many people left the citizenship of India in the last five years and adopted the citizenship of other countries.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh said in the Lok Sabha, “According to the information available with the Ministry of External Affairs, the number of people leaving India’s citizenship 85,256 in the year 2020, 1,63,370 in the year 2021, 2,25,620 in the year 2022, 2,16,219 in the year 2023 and 2,06,378 in the year 2023.

He also informed that the number of such cases was recorded 1,22,819 in 2011, 1,20,923 in the year 2012, 1,31,405 in the year 2013 and 1,29,328 in the year 2014. The central government said that due to giving up citizenship or taking foreign citizenship, they are individual and only are known to the person concerned.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirtivardhan Singh said, “The government recognizes the possibilities of global workplaces in this era of knowledge-based economy. Along with this, transformation reforms have also been brought in their relations with the Indian migrant community. ”
He said, “Successful, rich and influential overseas Indians are a valuable asset for the country and the government is trying to benefit in the national interest using their network and soft power.”
What is the number of total Indians living abroad,
At the same time, in response to another question, the Central Government said that according to the available data, the total number of Indians living abroad is 3.43 crore (total 3,43,56,193), out of which 1,71,81,071 are a person of ostendent Indian (PIO) (PIO) and 1,71,75,12222222222.
