‘Parliament’s action is being stopped in the name of protesting’, Amit Shah attacked opposition
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday (August 24, 2025) that Parliament or Legislatures are locations of discussions and discussions, but it is not right to not let the session run in the name of protesting for narrow political gains. Shah made this comment while addressing the ‘All India Speaker Conference’.
He said that three days before this, during the monsoon session of Parliament, after the opposition’s protests, there was very little work due to frequent disruption and adjournment. The Home Minister also said that when there is limited discussion-discussion in Parliament, the House’s contribution in nation building is affected.
In the name of protesting the house
He said, ‘There should be discussion-discussion in democracy, but the house should not be allowed to run in the name of protesting for someone’s narrow political benefit, it is not right.’ Shah said, ‘Opposition should always be restrained. If the House will not be allowed to run day by day or session-by-century in the name of protesting, then it is not right.
The Home Minister said that the country will have to consider this, people will have to consider it and elected representatives will have to consider it. Shah said that there should be some meaning in all discussions and all should work towards increasing the dignity and honor of the post of president.
The arguments of the ruling party and the opposition should be fair
He said, ‘We should work to provide a fair platform to raise public issues. The arguments of both the ruling party and the opposition should be fair. We should ensure that the House is operated according to the rules and regulations of the House concerned.
Citing the insult of Draupadi, the character of Mahabharata in Hastinapur, he said that whenever the dignity of the House has been compromised, the country has seen frightening results. The Home Minister appreciated the democratic tradition of India since independence and said that the roots of democracy are so deep here that even a drop of blood has fallen here while changing power, while in many countries the democratic situation deteriorated as time.
Thoughts to solve the problems of democracy
He said that if there is no discussion in Parliament or Legislative Assembly, then these buildings will remain lifeless. He said, ‘All members under the leadership of the Speaker express their views in these buildings, then it is a lively unit, which works in the interest of the country and the states.’ Describing the speaker as a guardian as well as a servant, Shah said that thought-churn is the best way to solve people’s problems in democracy.
He said that the purpose of any law should always be the welfare of the people, the inclusive development of the country, ensuring administrative efficiency, internal security of the nation and external security. Shah also paid tribute to Vitthalbhai Patel, the first elected Indian president of the Central Assembly.
Great freedom fighter Vitthalbhai Patel mentioned
He said that on this day 100 years ago, the great freedom fighter Vitthalbhai Patel was appointed as the Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly, which led to the beginning of the legislative history of India. Shah said that the contribution of Vitthalbhai Patel, brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, faded over time.
He said, ‘If the freedom struggle of the country was important, then it is equally important to run the country and establish legislative processes. Vitthalbhai Patel played an important role in establishing and strengthening democracy even in difficult times. We all should remember it.
Discussion on the independence of assemblies
Talking about Vitthalbhai, Shah said that he had created an independent assembly. He said that no assembly can work under the elected government, they should be independent. The Home Minister said that Vitthalbhai had said that only when the assemblies are independent, there will be significance of the discussions happening there.
Shah said that during the British period, Vitthalbhai Patel had decided to establish an independent legislative department, which was also accepted by the Constituent Assembly. He said that therefore, today this department works under all the assemblies of the country as well as the presiding officer in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Gujarat gave two great people
He said that the post of Speaker of the Assembly is very important and it is the responsibility of the Speaker to protect and increase the reputation of the House and Vitthalbhai Patel performed these works well. Shah said that Vitthalbhai Patel established many traditions in the House, which today works as a guide for legislative works, especially the Speaker.
He said, ‘When we talk about Vitthalbhai Patel, we proudly say that Gujarat has given two great people. The first brother, Sardar Patel, who worked shoulder to shoulder with Mahatma Gandhi in the freedom movement day and night and second, Vitthalbhai Patel laid the foundation of the legislative traditions of India and laid a strong foundation for today’s democracy.
