Sahara Group Money Laundering Case, ED filed charge sheet, disclosed to sell property worth crores
The Kolkata ED team has taken major action in the money laundering case related to Sahara Group. ED has filed a charge sheet against two arrested accused of Sahara Group Jitendra Prasad Verma and Anil Galappil Abraham. Investigation has revealed that many properties of Sahara Group, which were purchased from the money deposited from the public, were being sold secretly. There were heavy cash transactions in these deals. The ED says that Jitendra Verma and Anil Abraham were playing an important role in selling these properties and were carrying out the entire deal with others.
On the order of the Supreme Court, Sahara Group had deposited around 16138 crore in Sahara-Sibi account by March 2025. Interest on this money also increased. On the order of the court, 5000 crore of this were given to the Central Registrar of Cooperative Society (CRCs) so that the deposits of Sahara Society could get refunds.
So far so many people get back money
The refund started from July 2023 and by February 2025, 12.97 lakh people got back 2314 crore. By July 2025, more than 27 lakh depositors had received a refund of 5000 crores. Apart from this, Sahara Society has verified more than 14000 crores claims.
On 12 September 2025, the Supreme Court allowed CRCS to release 5000 crores again. Now this amount will also be returned to the depositors. The ED investigation strengthened the argument of CRCs. After which the court ordered the release of the fund. There is further effort that the remaining 19533 crore in Sahara-Sibi account can also be returned to the depositors soon.
Big disclosure in ED investigation
The ED investigation revealed that Sahara Group was running a pongy scheme for a long time. Thousands of FIRs are registered in which more than 500 cases were registered in different states. Out of these more than 300 cases come under PMLA. It is alleged that Sahara Group repeatedly forced people to re-delivery, did not return the money on maturity and hidden everything by manipulating the accounts. Fake loans were transferred from one company to another company and finally four cooperative societies were burdened with heavy debt.
Property purchased from people deposited money
Investigation also revealed that benami property was purchased from the money of deposits. Private use was spent and many funds were also sent abroad. The ED has so far taken out four attachment orders in which the benami land of Sahara Group and the assets of some persons have been seized. At present, Jitendra Prasad Verma and Anil Abraham are in judicial custody. The ED says that investigation of senior officers of Sahara Group and transactions abroad is still going on.
