Shiv Sena Stalwart Manohar Joshi Passes Away at 86

Mumbai, February 23, 2024: Manohar Joshi, the former Maharashtra Chief Minister and prominent Shiv Sena leader, passed away today at the age of 86. Joshi, known for his contributions to public service and political leadership, succumbed to a cardiac arrest at the P. D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai.

A stalwart of the Shiv Sena, Joshi held the position of Chief Minister from 1995 to 1999, playing a pivotal role in the state’s governance during his tenure. He was instrumental in the formation of the Sena-BJP coalition government and spearheaded various infrastructure development projects and social welfare initiatives.

Born in Nandvi village in 1937, Joshi began his career as a teacher before venturing into politics in the 1960s. His ascent within the Shiv Sena ranks was swift, leading to his appointment as the Mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977. Subsequently, he entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1985, eventually rising to the position of Leader of the Opposition.

Joshi’s influence extended beyond Maharashtra, as evidenced by his election to the Lok Sabha in 1999 and subsequent tenure as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004. Throughout his political career, he was recognized for his impartiality and adept management of parliamentary affairs.

His passing has elicited condolences from leaders across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledging him as a “respected leader dedicated to serving the nation.” Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray hailed Joshi as a “pillar of the party” and commended his pivotal role in its development.

Survived by his wife, Anagha, a son, Unmesh, and two daughters, Asmita and Namrata, Joshi’s legacy will endure as an inspiration for future generations of politicians and public servants alike.
