Supreme Court handed over a case related to stray dogs to a bench of three judges, hearing will be held tomorrow

The Supreme Court on Monday (11 August 2025) directed stray dogs to shift to the shelter home in Delhi-NCR, after which a big debate has been sparked in the country. The society is divided into two parts on the court’s decision. Now the matter has been sent to a 3 -judge bench, which includes Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria. A bench of three judges will pronounce the verdict on Thursday (14 August 2025).

The bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan on Monday ordered all stray dogs to be caught in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. There was a dispute about this. This order was being described as contrary to some old orders of the Supreme Court and Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. The order came on Monday (13 August 2025) was uploaded in writing. By then, information about change in the bench came.

Main part of written order

1. In Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad, the municipal corporations should start catching stray dogs at the earliest. How to do this, decide yourself. If there is a need to form a force, then do it.

2. If someone puts a hindrance in it, then we will see it strictly. Children, old and others can roam safely. This is our priority. There is no need to listen to any emotional argument in this.

3. In Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad, inform the court in 8 weeks by making dog shelters/pounds.

4. There is enough staff in the dog shelter home which can do sterilization, division and vaccination. CCTV monitoring. Dogs are not allowed to be taken out of the shelter home.

5. We are also concerned about dogs. There is no abuse or cruelty in the shelter home with them. Not too crowded in a shelter home. At least 2 responsible people should be on duty for monitoring all the time.

6. If someone wants to adopt dogs, then permission should be given according to the rules. Keep in mind that it does not mean to leave them back in the street, so appropriate conditions should be imposed while adopting them.

7. Prepare the record of every authority caught dogs. Present it in the next hearing. In any case, the dog should not be released back.

8. Do not be able to follow this order. There is a system to decide the identity of the caught dogs so that they could not be released back.

9. All related authority issue helpline number in 1 week. In this, the dog who cut the complaint should be caught in 4 hours of receiving the complaint.

10. Information related to the availability of rabies vaccine should be given to the people.
