‘Those who talk about Tamil culture and language betrayed Muupanar’, Boli Nirmala Sitharaman

On Saturday (August 30, 2025), Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman alleged that some forces in Tamil Nadu gave Tamil Manila Congress founder and late leader G. Of. Mupanar was stopped from becoming the Prime Minister of the country.

Finance Minister Sitharaman made this comment after paying tribute to Muupanar on his 24th death anniversary. Without naming someone in a program here, he said that these forces, which often talk about promoting Tamil, Tamil culture and Tamil language, are the same forces who stopped Muupanar from holding the post of Prime Minister when the opportunity came.

Praising Mupanar, Sitharaman recalled that during her college days, when her interest in politics was emerging, she saw Muupanar as a widely respected person in Tamil Nadu. He said, ‘Muupanar is known for his simplicity and honesty and was a nationalist leader. He was a respected leader across the country. He was known not only in Bihar, Haryana and every corner of the country.

Sitharaman on Saturday gave All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Krishgam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi. Palaniswami, DMDK treasurer Sudhish, BJP leader Nayanar Naganthiran, K Annamalai and others along with others laid a wreath at the memorial of Muupanar at Tenampet here.

Mupanar’s stature impressive

Sitharaman alleged, ‘Muupanar’s stature was impressive. People who knew him respected him and worked unitedly. However, when he had an opportunity to become Prime Minister, some forces stopped him. We all know what were those forces that prevented him from becoming Prime Minister.

In his brief speech, Sitharaman said, ‘Such an incident cannot be forgotten. I think it is one of the biggest betrayals of Tamil Nadu so far. The Union Minister clarified that his comment should not be considered political, as the program was organized to pay tribute to Mupanar.

Emphasis on the need for change in politics

Assembly elections are going to be held in Tamil Nadu in 2026, so the Union Minister emphasized the need for change in Tamil Nadu politics during the upcoming elections. He said, ‘People want good governance. It is our duty to implement this alliance with it.

Without naming anyone, he made a family living by selling drugs and liquor in the state. I appeal to all of you for the welfare of the public that this alliance should unite and provide good governance.

The best tribute to Mupanar

He said, ‘There may be some internal differences between the coalition partners, but there is no need to worry about it. Experienced political leaders are present on this platform and all will stand together and work towards that vision (to provide good governance). He said, ‘We all should work together and this will be the best tribute to Muupanar.’
