Trump made H-1B visa fees more than salary, know why this decision is a big shock for Indians

US President Donald Trump announced a major change in H1B visa rules on Friday (September 19, 2025). He has now fixed a fee of $ 100,000 (about 88 lakh rupees) for the new H1B visa. This fee is more than the annual salary of a person receiving a new H1B visa. This means that most people will not be able to take this visa.

With this change, the H1B visa program will be almost over. This is a huge disadvantage for India, because only H1B visas were available to Indians. This disadvantage can be larger than those heavy tariffs (taxes), which Trump had put on Indian goods earlier. This decision has shocked the relations between India and America.

Companies will have to pay money every year

According to the Financial Times report, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik said that companies will have to pay this money every year. However, in the official order of the White House, it has been called only an ‘application fee’, that is, the government itself is not making it clear that this huge amount will have to be paid once or will have to be paid every year.

According to the rules, if this annual fee is incurred, it will be very difficult and expensive for companies to bring employees on H-1B visas. Apart from the H1B, the Trump government has also announced a gold-card visa scheme, according to which individuals and corporations can pay $ 1 million or 20 lakh dollars in order to get American visa, whose money is Rs 9 crore and Rs 18 crore.

New visa fee more than annual salary

This decision of the Trump government is enough reasons to abolish the H-1B visa system, as now the visa fee has become equal to the average H1B employee’s salary of almost full year. For someone looking for his first job under H1B visa, the visa fee is now more than the annual salary.

According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USICS) 2025, the average salary for the initial job under the H1B visa program was $ 97,000. This number was a little more ($ 132,000) for those who continued the H1B visa, on an average amount of $ 1,20,000.
