Vice Presidential election is a big upset in 2025! These three parties refused to participate in the election process, know what will be its effect?
The Vice Presidential election has always been interesting in Indian politics. This time the election has become even more special, as three important parties – BJD, BRS and Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) MPs Sarabjit Singh Khalsa and Amritpal Singh have announced to boycott the Vice Presidential elections. These parties have a total of 14 MPs. Due to their absence, the total number of voters has come down from 781 to 767. That is, for victory, now only 384 votes are required. This step directly both candidates CP Radhakrishnan of NDA and B.C. of India Block. Sudarshan will affect the mathematics of Reddy’s votes.
The NDA already has a strong number. NDA has 425 MPs including Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Apart from this, YSRCP also supported the NDA, causing this number to reach 436. This means that Radhakrishnan’s victory is almost decided. The damage done to the opposition will make the margin of their victory even bigger.
Opposition strategy and challenges
The opposition played a different bet this time. Congress, former Supreme Court Judge B.K. Sudarshan Reddy was made a candidate to reveal a non-political and fair face. With this step, the opposition definitely gained the support of big leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal, but the weakness of not bringing the BJD, BRS and Akali Dal along is clear. Especially because these three parties have been close to the central government many times before and have supported NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar in the 2022 Vice Presidential elections.
Importance of number game in election
A total of 781 people from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participate in the Vice Presidential elections. However, now the BJD, BRS and Akali Dal have decided to make a distance, which has reduced the number of 14 members. In this way, the number of people participating in voting has increased to 767. In this way, one candidate will need at least 384 votes to win, but the NDA alone has 436 votes, because the number of their members. Secondly, the number of India Block and other colleagues is just 324. It seems clear from this figure that the difference of victory is going to be from 112 votes.
Role of independent and small parties
However, 7 independent MPs, ZPM and AAP’s Swati Maliwal have not yet clarified their stand. The party whip does not apply in the Vice Presidential election, so there is a possibility of cross voting. Nevertheless, the NDA has such a strong support that these changes are not in a position to affect the result.
