West Bengal Teacher Recruitment Scam: Kolkata’s special court sent arrested TMC MLA to 6 days ED custody

In the Assistant Teacher Recruitment Scam of West Bengal School Service Commission, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Jiban Krishna Saha on Tuesday (August 26, 2025). He is an MLA from Burwan seat in Murshidabad district. The ED caught him under the Money Laundering Act and produced him in a special court in Kolkata, from where he has been sent to a 6 -day ED custody.

This case is related to illegal appointments of Assistant Teachers from 9th to 12th grade. On the order of the High Court of West Bengal, the CBI first filed an FIR and later the ED also started its investigation in the case.

Property worth 238 crores has been attached during ED action

ED investigation revealed that Jiban Krishna Saha and his close people sold jobs in exchange for money instead of eligible candidates. It is alleged that crores of rupees were deposited in Saha and his wife’s bank accounts. Many candidates gave a statement to the ED that he had given cash money directly to Jiban Krishna Saha so that he could get a teacher’s job. The ED says that the amount of money related to this scam i.e. Proceeds of Crime is in crores of rupees. So far, assets worth about 238 crore have been attached.

Mobile, papers and other evidence found in ED raids

On August 25, the ED also raided the houses of Saha and his associates. During this, Saha tried to erase the evidence and threw his mobile phone into the drain. Which the team later recovered. During the search, digital devices, papers related to land and property and other important documents were seized.

Case is one of West Bengal’s biggest corruption cases- Supreme Court

The Supreme Court also gave a big decision in this case. In the order given on April 3, 2025, the court had canceled more than 25,000 teachers and staff recruitments and described the entire process as fraud. The ED says that this recruitment scam is one of the biggest corruption cases in the state. The investigation of the case is going on and there may be more revelations in this case in the coming days.
