The Mughal emperor was famous for his hobbies and many weddings, but when it came to their daughters, they used to be very cautious. He always feared that his son -in -law might not take power. This is the reason that the Mughals often performed their daughters’ weddings in relatives. Many princesses remained virgin throughout their life. This tradition was going on since the time of Emperor Akbar.
Shah Jahan’s daughter Jahanara Begum was also one of the same shehzadis who could never marry. Shah Jahan used to love his daughter very much and wanted no stranger man to get close to him. Shehzadi’s security was so strong that the arrival of outsider was almost impossible. The guards were stationed at every door of Jahanara Begum’s palace and every step of them was monitored.
A remarkable event in history
Nevertheless, a remarkable incident is recorded in history, which was written by French doctor Francois Bernier in the 17th century. Bernier Darashikoh was the elder son of Shah Jahan and a personal physician of the Mughal prince. During this time, he got a chance to hear and see many stories of the Mughal court.
Shah Jahan was angry with what?
According to the Bernier, once influenced by Jahanara, a young man succeeded in meeting him. This incident was extremely unbearable for Shah Jahan. As soon as he came to know about this, he became angry with anger. He immediately ordered that the young man be caught and he should be given proper punishment. This makes it clear how seriously the Mughal emperors took the safety of their daughters.
Jahanara Begum’s story is not only a proof of the strict rules of the Mughals, but it also shows the politics of control and security in his family. Their lifestyle and decision not to marry prove that personal freedom for power and security also had to be abandoned sometimes.
