After announcing Australia, Canada and Britain’s Palestine as a nation, the Congress on Sunday (September 21, 2025) targeted the Modi government, saying that India’s policy has been embarrassing and morally cowardly on Palestine, especially on Palestine.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Australia, Canada and Britain have recognized Palestine as a nation and soon other countries are expected to do the same.” He said that India had formally recognized the Palestinian nation on 18 November 1988. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh gave a clear reference to the Israeli-Hamas struggle on X (East Twitter), saying, “India’s policy regarding Palestine has been-and has been in the last 20 months in the last 20 months.”
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra mentioned history
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also mentioned that India was one of the first countries in the world to recognize Palestine as a nation in November 1988. He wrote in a post on X (East Twitter), “At that time and actually during the heroic struggle of the Palestinian people, we showed the world by standing in favor of right and maintaining the values of humanity and justice on the international stage.” Priyanka said that Australia, Canada and Britain have also adopted the same path with a delay of 37 years.
Congress leaders comments
This remark of Congress leaders came after the UK Prime Minister Care Stormer confirmed on Sunday (21 September 2025) that the UK is formally recognizing the Palestinian nation despite the strong opposition from the US and Israel. According to media reports, Stormer announced this after the announcements of Canada and Australia, which seems to be a coordinated initiative of Commonwealth countries. The Congress had said last month that it strongly condemns the silence of the Modi government on Israeli’s unacceptable actions.
Congress leader Priyanka’s charge
Even in August, Congress leader Priyanka alleged that Israel was massacre and the Government of India had criticized that when Israel is destroying the people of Palestine, he is silent. Earlier this month, India voted in favor of the proposal of the United Nations General Assembly, supporting the ‘New York Declaration’. The manifesto called for a peaceful solution to the Palestine issue through the bipartoil solution.
