HC petition demanded to investigate allegations of Rahul Gandhi-Anurag Thakur, imposed a fine of one lakh

The Madras High Court on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) rejected the PIL (PIL), demanding a directive to the Election Commission to give clarification on the alleged mass disturbances in the voter list in the 2024 general elections. This allegation was made by Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur in their respective press conference.

ECI Instructions cannot be given to side to side: HC

The High Court said in its order that the petition is completely misleading and baseless. The court made it clear that it lacks concrete evidence and solid material and it is only based on allegations and counter-allegations. The court also admitted that such a petition is unclear and filed without enough facts and details, so the Election Commission (ECI) cannot be instructed to clarify its side. Apart from this, the court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the petitioner and said that this amount should be deposited to the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority.

Opposition continuously ECI But the charge of vote theft is being accused

The court also made it clear that it has not given any opinion on the merits of the case in this case and the Election Commission (ECI) is free to take its decision independently. On the other hand, the opposition is constantly alleging that votes have been stolen by tampering with the voter list in the 2024 elections. Rahul Gandhi recently raised the issue by giving a detailed presentation in his press conference, while the Congress and other opposition parties are demanding transparency from the Election Commission (ECI). On the other hand, the ruling party is denying the allegations, calling it an excuse for the defeat of the opposition.

ECI Trying to weaken the institutions- BJP

There is a sharp debate on this issue in political corridors. The opposition is calling it an attack on democracy, while the BJP says that questioning the credibility of the Election Commission is an attempt to weaken the institutions, that is, it is an issue on which politics is being done in the country and will remain a big issue in the upcoming assembly elections.
