A bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on Wednesday (20 August 2025) to regulate online gaming and promote educational and social online games. Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav introduced the online sports promotion and regulation Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha amidst the frequent slogans of opposition members on the issue of special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar.
The bill has provisions to ban online money gaming or its advertisements and it provides imprisonment or fine for those present or advertising. There is also a provision for promoting, regulating, regulating, regulating it, and establishing an authority for its strategic development and regulation. The bill has prohibited the proposal, operation, simplification, advertisement, publicity and participation of online money game through a computer, mobile machine or internet, especially where such activities operate across the state borders or from abroad.
Important thing related to Bill
The Bill states that its purpose is to protect people from social, economic, psychological and privacy effects of such sports. Especially protecting youth and weaker sections is the main task. Apart from this, it is necessary to ensure responsibly use of digital technologies, maintain public system, protect public health, to protect the security and sovereignty of the state. At the same time, with the help of the Bill, a national level legal structure is to be established in public interest.
Break on market growth
India’s online gaming industry is currently worth about 32,000 crores. Out of this, 86% Revenue comes from Real Money Gaming (RMG). Industry experts estimated that by 2029 this market could reach Rs 80,000 crore, but the ban on money gaming will directly affect this growth trajectory.
Pressure on big companies
The business models of India’s major companies such as Dream11, Games24x7, Winzo and Gameskraft depends largely on real money gaming. After this ban, their main revenue source will be closed. Companies will have to shift towards e-sports, academic games and social games, but this transition will not be easy.
