Preparation for control of online gaming complete, Ashwini Vaishnav said- ‘Rules applicable from 1 October’

Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Thursday (September 18, 2025) that the Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Act will be applicable from October 1. This Act passed last month in Parliament, while on one side promotes e-sports and other online games, bans all types of money based online games.

Vaishnav said in a program organized to give information about ‘AI Impact Summit’ 2026 India, ‘The rules will be applicable from October 1’. The minister said that even after the online gaming law has been passed, the government is discussing with the industry.

Another round discussion with the government industry

He said, ‘We have interacted with the industry, we have discussed with them many times, we have been discussing with them for the last nearly three years. After the law was passed, once again, we interacted with them. We also interacted with banks and practically all possible aspects and we have finalized the rules.

He said that the government will discuss another round with the industry and if they want some more time, we will definitely consider a more counseling approach. Whatever will be practical, we will do it. This has been our approach, but at this time our goal is to implement the new law from October 1.

Government’s extensive discussion with banks

One of the concerns raised by the industry is how to return the balance lying in the user accounts. Vaishnav said that the government has held extensive discussions with banks and they have reached the solution.

Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had told in Parliament that about 45 crore people in the country play such online games and it is causing financial loss of Rs 20,000 crore every year. He said that this law is necessary for the safety, mental health, and economic stability of the youth.
