Supreme Court canceled Chhota Rajan’s bail in Shetty murder case, said- postponing the sentence of a person who has been punished in many cases is not right

The Supreme Court has canceled the bail received by gangster Chhota Rajan in the Jaya Shetty murder case. This case against Rajendra Sadashiv Niklaje alias Chhota Rajan is 24 years old. Hotel owner Jaya Shetty was killed in 2001. The Bombay High Court granted him bail in this case. However, he could not come out due to being in jail in other cases.

A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta gave this order after hearing the arguments of Additional Solicitor General SV Raju presented to the CBI. The court said that Chhota Rajan was absconding for 27 years. He has also been convicted in four other cases. It would not be right to suspend such a person.

What is the matter?
Jaya Shetty, owner of South Mumbai’s Golden Crown Hotel, was receiving extortion threats from Rajan’s gang. He got police protection which was removed 2 months before his murder. He refused to give the amount sought by the gang. Due to this, on May 4, 2001, Shetty was shot outside his office. In May 2024, the special MCOCA court of Mumbai sentenced Chhota Rajan to life imprisonment.

Life imprisonment in 2 cases
Apart from Jaya Shetty Murder Case, Chhota Rajan has also been sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder of 2011 journalist Jyotirmaya Day. After absconding for nearly two and a half decades, he was arrested in Bali in October 2015 and was extradited to India. There were 71 cases against him in Maharashtra, which were later transferred to the CBI.
