Chapters on the life and sacrifice of India’s first and only field marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman and Major Somnath Sharma have been added in this educational year 2025-26 in class 8 (Urdu), class 7 (Urdu) and class 8 (English) in NCERT syllabus.
The aim of the newly launched chapters is to impart knowledge to the students about the inspirational stories of courage and duty. Sam Manekshaw, the only military officer and former military chief of the Indian Army, was awarded the post of Field Marshal. He is remembered for his extraordinary leadership and strategic skills. At the same time, Brigadier Mohammad Usman and Major Somnath Sharma, who were awarded the Mahavir Chakra and Paramveer Chakra (posthumously), sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation and they remain a symbol of the highest sacrifice.
The initiative is to inform all the students of the country about Indian military history
As part of efforts to establish the National War Memorial (NWM) as a major national site, the Ministry of Defense has included NWM and its related references in the school curriculum in association with the Ministry of Education and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Through their inclusion in these stories and syllabus, students will not only get information about the military history of India, but will also learn the lesson of important life on sympathy, emotional intelligence and contribution to nation building.
National War Memorial was established on 25 February 2019
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National War Memorial (NWM) nation at the prestigious Central Vista ‘C’ Hexagon at India Gate, New Delhi on February 25, 2019. This monument was established to awaken the spirit of patriotism, high moral values, sacrifice, national spirit and belonging among all citizens.
