Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence on Thursday (August 28, 2025) before leaving for a visit to Japan and China that the yatra would take forward national interests and priorities and contribute to the construction of fruitful cooperation in restoring regional and global peace. Modi will visit Japan on 29 and 30 August in the first phase of his visit. After this, Modi will visit Japan to visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) annual summit.

Before his departure, Modi said in a statement that he is keen to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Chinfing during the summit in Tianjin. Modi will hold a summit with Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba there. The Prime Minister said on a visit to Japan, “We will focus on shaping the next stage of our special strategic and global partnership. The partnership between the two countries has made continuous and significant progress over the last 11 years.”

He said, “We will try to give a new flight to our cooperation, expand the scope and ambitions of economic and investment relations, pursue cooperation in new and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor.”
Relationship between India and Japan
The Prime Minister said that the visit will also be an opportunity to strengthen India-Japan civilized and cultural relations. Modi will visit the city of Tianjin in China on August 31 and September 1 in the second phase of his journey. Modi said in a statement that India is committed to working with SCO members to resolve shared challenges and deepen regional cooperation.

He said, “I will go to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin from Japan on the invitation of President Xi Chinfing.” Modi said, “India is an active and creative member of SCO. During the chairmanship of SCO, we presented new views and took the initiative to cooperate in the areas of innovation, health and cultural exchange.” He said, “I am also eager to meet President Xi Chinfing, President Putin and other leaders during the summit.”
