India commented on Pakistan in the United Nations Security Council, saying that Pakistan pretends to be the protector of human rights, but the Bangladesh liberation of the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war began during the 1971 Bangla War, its sexual violence and the ’embarrassing history’ of heinous crimes against women continue without any punishment even today.
Aldos Matthew Punnus, in -charge of India’s permanent mission, said on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), “The shameless that the Pakistan Army committed the heinous crimes of sexual violence against women in the then East Pakistan in 1971 is recorded in history.” Responding to Pakistan’s allegations on India, he said, “This condemnable series continues even today without any restriction.”
Rape incident of 4,00,000 women
Punnus made this statement in response to the allegations leveled against India by Pakistan’s permanent Ifim Iftikaar Ahmed. During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the Pakistani Army and its associates carried out a planned incidents of rape of about 4,00,000 women in East Pakistan. It is ironic that people who carry out these crimes are now pretending to be the protector of justice.
He said, ‘Pakistan’s double and hypocritical policy is clear.’ The theme of discussion in the Security Council was ‘new strategies to ensure access to life saving services and protection for women victims of sexual violence in the struggle areas’, but Pakistan attacked India by raising the issue of Kashmir as usual.
Crime registered in United Nations agencies
Punnus mentioned a series of crimes used by Pakistan as a weapon against women. He said that the United Nations agencies have registered these crimes. He said, “The prevalence of crimes like kidnapping, smuggling, child marriage, forced marriage, sexual violence and forced religion has been recorded against thousands of weak women and girls of religious and ethnic minority communities in Pakistan.”
They are also mentioned in the recent report of the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR). He said that the latest report of OHCHR states that women detained in Pakistan especially on charges of blasphemy face serious sexual violence.
Violence against women and girls
A report by experts released last month said, “We have suffered a setback from reports of increasing violence against communities, which are constantly suffering from attacks, murders and oppression on the basis of their religion or faith.” The Human Rights Committee of OHCHR said in a comprehensive review of Pakistan’s situation in December that it is concerned with high level of violence including murder, rape, kidnapping and domestic violence against women and girls.
In a coordinated attack on behalf of Pakistan’s United Nations Mission and a Palestinian journalist, the general secretary’s special representative Pramila Patton was questioned. The journalist asked the general secretary spokesperson as to why the allegations of Pakistan Ambassador were not included in Patton’s comments. Spokesperson Stephen Dujarik avoided this and said, ‘I think the report was prepared based on whatever information was with the office. I cannot say anything more than this.
Crisis due to resources cut
Patton warned that women victims of sexual violence are facing crisis due to cuts in resources to assist. He said, ‘We are told that there is no money for life -saving help, while military expenses are increasing and the world spends on arms in 24 hours to address sexual violence in the struggle areas in less than a year.’
