Rail network will be expanded in India under PM speed-power scheme, cabinet approves projects worth Rs 12,328 crore

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved four projects costing a total cost of about Rs 12,328 crore of the Ministry of Railways. The central government gave information about this decision on Wednesday (August 27, 2025).

The projects that have been approved by the Union Cabinet include Deshlapar-Hajipir-Luluna and Vayor-Lakhp new line, Secunderabad (Sanathnagar) -Wadi third and fourth line, Bhagalpur-Jamalpur third line and furcating-nine Tinsukia doubling. These four projects covering 13 districts of Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar and Assam will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by 565 km.

The aim of the new projects of the Ministry of Railways is to ensure uninterrupted and torrent transport of both passengers and goods. These initiatives will reduce logistics costs along with improving connectivity and travel facility. In addition, these projects will contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which will promote permanent and efficient rail operations. During the construction of these projects, direct employment will also be created for about 251 lakh human lives.

Rail connectivity will increase in remote areas of Kutch of Gujarat

The proposed new railway line will provide connectivity to remote areas of Kutch region of Gujarat. It will add 145 routes to the Vidman railway network of Gujarat and 164 track cousters, which is an estimated cost of Rs 2,526 crore. The Ministry of Railways has stated the deadline for the completion of this project for three years.

In addition to promoting tourism in the state of Gujarat, this new railway line will also help in the transport of salt, cement, coal, clinker and bentonite. The strategic significance of this project is that it will provide connectivity to the Rann of Kutch. 13 new railway stations will be added to it, so that the Harappan site Dholavira, Koteshwar Temple, Narayan Sarovar and Lakhpat Fort will also come under the railway network. This will benefit 866 villages and about 16 lakh population.

Projects made under PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan

The 173-km long Secunderabad (Sanathnagar)-The completion of the third and fourth lines, spread in Karnataka and Telangana, is five years and the cost of Rs 5,012 crore, while the 53-km-long Bhagalpur-Jamalpur in Bihar is three years for the third line and its cost is Rs 1,156 crore. The work of the 194 km long furketing-new Tinsukia doubling project will be completed in four years, which costs Rs 3,634 crore.

These projects have been made in accordance with the PM-Mati Shakti National Master Plan, whose objective is to increase multi-model connectivity and logistic efficiency through integrated plan and stakeholder consultation.
